Tongue cancer - diagnosis and treatment
This is a rare oncological disease, accounting for about 3% of all oncological diagnoses. However, among tumours of the oral cavity, this type occurs most often - in 55% of cases. Most often diagnosed in men aged 40-50 years.
Causes of development and types
Diagnosis shows that to the development of the disease can lead:
- chronic trauma to the oral mucosa;
- prolonged course of stomatitis;
- smoking;
- alcohol abuse;
- the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV).
There are several forms of tumours:
- Infiltrative - with the formation of dense areas;
- Papillary - with a gradual increase in papilloma;
- Ulcerative - with the formation of non-healing wounds.
According to localisation, cancer of the root, frenulum and body are distinguished.
From the point of view of histology distinguish:
- Squamous cell (more often forms closer to the tip or in the middle of the tongue);
- Adenocarcinoma (develops in the salivary glands).
Even at the first stage of the disease causes marked discomfort, so therapy should be started immediately after diagnosis. In Israeli clinics, the cost of tongue cancer treatment is more affordable than in some other countries.
Symptoms and stages of oncology
If timely treatment is not started, the disease will progress, causing:
- the appearance of ulcers and fissures;
- profuse salivation;
- thickening;
- restricted mobility;
- difficulty swallowing.
In the early stages, the ulcers are small, but over time they enlarge, do not heal, can become infected and lead to speech impairment.
There are four stages in the development of the disease:
- The first - small induration and ulcers without pain;
- The second - a tumour up to 1 cm, the appearance of pain, increasing ulcers, reduced mobility;
- Third - tumour up to 2 cm, pain in the mouth and temples, the need for urgent treatment;
- Fourth - a pronounced increase in tumour, swelling of the tongue, sudden weight loss, weakness, risk of metastasis.
