Cancer of the jaw
Tumour of the jaw is a neoplasm that arises from epithelial tissue. Oncology in such a zone can develop in both benign and malignant forms.
Cancer of the lower jaw, which is diagnosed and treated, including with the use of radiation therapy, mainly in clinics in Israel, is a rare disease (about 2% of all cancer cases). It occurs equally often in men and women, mostly over 45 years of age, although it is possible to develop the disease in childhood.
Varieties and symptoms
Maxillofacial oncology is subdivided into:
- Primary (masses developing directly in the bone tissue);
- secondary (metastases from cancer of neighbouring organs).
Benign tumours:
- Ameloblastomas – affect the lower mucosa in patients under 35 years of age;
- Odontomas – characteristic of children under 15 years of age, may lead to diastema;
- Osteomas – disturb the mobility of the mandible;
- Haemangiomas – most often form in the oral cavity, less often in the jaw region.
Malignant forms:
- Carcinomas – quickly spread towards the nose and eye sockets, require mandatory treatment;
- Osteogenic sarcomas – develop on both jaws, are characterised by an aggressive course and a tendency to metastasis.
The main symptoms of jaw cancer are:
- persistent nasal congestion;
- discharge of bloody mucus;
- intractable migraines;
- numbness in the eye area;
- loosening of teeth;
- uncontrollable lacrimation;
- tooth pain;
- difficult facial expressions;
- bad breath;
- sudden loss of weight and appetite;
- bleeding ulcers.
If the tumour is located on the mucosa, it may be visible externally and cause facial asymmetry.
Causes and stages of development
Israeli specialists, to whom patients turn due to the optimal combination of cost and quality, distinguish 4 stages of the disease:
- 1 – only one part is affected, there are no metastases;
- 2 – both parts are involved, the first metastases appear, radiation therapy is indicated;
- 3 – tumour spreads to neighbouring tissues, multiple metastases;
- 4 – metastases connect different structures of the body.
The main causes are:
- long-term smoking;
- chronic inflammation of the mucosa;
- mechanical trauma;
- poor nutrition;
- exposure to carcinogens.
Treatment of jaw cancer in Israel
Treatment of jaw cancer abroad is an individualised therapy based on modern protocols. Usually a comprehensive approach is used, including:
- radiation therapy;
- chemotherapy;
- surgical intervention.
