What is pleurisy?
Outside, the lungs are covered with a membrane - the pleura, which protects the organ from adjacent tissues. Pulmonary disease accompanied by inflammation of the pleura is called pleurisy. There are two forms of pleurisy - dry and exudative. In the first case, a fibrous plaque forms on the surface of the membrane, which thickens the pleura and makes it rough. In the second, an excessive amount of fluid accumulates between the pleural layers - pleural effusion.
