Lung abscess
An inflammatory process in the soft tissues, which is accompanied by the formation of a cavity filled with pus, surrounded by a capsule, is called an abscess. An abscess can occur on mucous membranes or on the skin of a person, as well as affect internal organs.
Lung abscess is a disease that can be caused by exposure to pathogenic microbes, among them the most common culprits of the disease are fungal pathogens, staphylococci, gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms that enter the lungs in various ways:
- from the mouth or throat;
- through the bloodstream;
- in case of injury.

The disease occurs in several stages, the first is the formation of a purulent cavity, which is accompanied by the following symptoms:
- fever;
- intoxication;
- loss of appetite;
- painful sensations in the chest;
- shortness of breath and cough.
After spontaneous opening of the cavity with pus, the patient's condition worsens, a large amount of purulent sputum is released, which has an unpleasant odor.
A lung abscess can take a long time. An abscess after the release of pus can heal on its own, but if the abscess lasts more than two months, we can talk about a chronic form of the disease, which is dangerous with the occurrence of complications - the infection can spread throughout the body.
To diagnose a lung abscess, a number of tests are performed and research:
- general and biochemical blood test;
- urinalysis;
- chest x-ray;
- computed tomography;
- bacteriological analysis of sputum and blood;
- fibrobronchoscopy and bronchography.
Treatment of a lung abscess is a long process that includes antibiotic therapy (rather long-term use of antibiotics). Also used are drugs that improve the draining function - mucolytic agents, inhalations. If the disease was triggered by a foreign body entering the respiratory tract, a bronchoscopy may be performed to remove it. In some cases, they resort to surgical treatment - removal of the affected tissue.
